Job Description

 

The ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Technician - Early Intervention will work directly with the children served by GoodLife’s North Star Academy (NSA). Many of these students are diagnosed with autism or other intellectual or developmental disabilities and have substantial skill deficits and engage in severe problem behavior. This position will work with these students to implement behavior management procedures and skill acquisition programs.

This position is ideally suited for:
· RBT Certification or a Bachelors in Applied Behavioral Science or related field with willingness to obtain the RBT Certification.
· Anyone working toward becoming a BCaBA or BCBA who needs supervised field experience to accompany a course sequence (This includes students in online programs!)
· Professionals or recent graduates who have completed coursework in ABA or a related discipline and are searching for an entry point to clinical practice.

Responsibilities and Duties:
The primary responsibility of the ABA Technician is to work directly with the children served by North Star Academy (NSA), ages 2.5 through 12. The majority of children are diagnosed with autism or other intellectual or developmental disabilities and have substantial skill deficits and engage in severe problem behavior. Under the supervision of licensed, certified, and experienced clinicians, the ABA Technician implements individualized behavior management procedures and skill acquisition programs. Specific duties include:
1. Assisting the children served by NSA to increase their independence by developing skills in various activities of daily living (e.g., meal time behaviors, toileting, hygiene routines);
2. Assisting the children served by NSA to increase their vocal and non-vocal (e.g., sign language, PECS, software-based) communication skills;
3. Assisting the children served by NSA to reduce problem behavior (e.g., aggression, self-injurious behavior) and learn appropriate replacement behaviors by implementing approved behavior management procedures;
4. Assisting the children served by NSA in accessing the community through planned outings and vocational rehabilitation opportunities;
5. Assisting the children served by NSA to acquire skills that will be necessary for transitions to less restrictive settings;
6. Documenting the efficacy of behavior management and skill acquisition programs by recording accurate data, summarizing those data into data management applications (e.g., Excel), and visually analyzing and reviewing those data regularly with supervisors;
7. Maintaining physical and electronic files and other materials for the children served by NSA;
8. Preparing teaching materials and helping to maintain facility premises on a daily basis including but not limited to, ensuring sufficient blank copies of data sheets are available; stocking food items; cleaning public areas such as bathrooms, kitchen, hallways, and program areas; and reporting discovered maintenance concerns;
9. Participating in various staff training's and team meetings, as well as meetings with other members of the interdisciplinary team; and
10. Additional responsibilities assigned as circumstances arise.

Qualifications and Requirements:
1. A high school diploma (or equivalent) required; Bachelor’s degree preferred;
2. Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential required;
3. Experience working with individuals with autism, other intellectual or developmental disabilities, and/or severe problem behavior preferred;
4. An interest in developing skills related to applied behavior analysis, function-based assessment and treatment of problem behavior, data-driven programming, research-supported approaches to skill acquisition, and behavioral research;
5. Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums;
6. Ability to pass all NSA-specific competency checks;
7. Ability to maintain a neutral affect and professional composure in the midst of chaotic situations;
8. Ability to assist individuals with personal care tasks, including toileting routines, with sensitivity and age- and skill-appropriate privacy;
9. Ability to perform standard first aid and physical management procedures including, but not limited to, repetitive lifting, kneeling, bending, stooping, blocking, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling motions;
10. Ability to pass the GoodLife’s physical and agility tests;
11. Ability to repetitively lift significant amounts of weight and ability to perform unassisted transitions of children and adolescents with limited motor skills;
12. Ability to work as part of a team, including flexibility and adaptability in regards to daily task assignments;
13. Ability to operate a motor vehicle, which includes proof of a valid driver’s license, an ability to maintain automobile liability insurance as required by state law in Kansas and/or Missouri, and an ability to qualify as a driver under insurance guidelines.
