Position Description

The Geospatial Information Sciences ( GIS ) Program at The University of Texas at Dallas is seeking applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in GIS , specializing in Crime/Violence Analysis and Mapping. We are looking for a dynamic and innovative scholar to advance GIS and its applications in criminology, criminal justice, and policing through collaborative research, teaching, and service. 

The successful candidate will conduct high-impact research integrating GIS with crime, policing and violence studies, addressing critical social, economic, and security challenges. Research areas may involve but are not limited to analysis of crime patterns, series, and trends; big data and GeoAI assisted crime modeling and prediction; optimization for efficient policing resource deployment; identification, prevention, and intervention in potential violence; proactive and targeted investigation of terrorists; hotspot geographical profiling, spatial link analysis, evaluation of policing effectiveness, and other spatiotemporal analytics approaches. Teaching responsibilities will include developing and delivering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in GIS , GIS applications in criminology, geospatial intelligence, spatial statistics and analysis, and related subjects. The candidate should also foster interdisciplinary collaborations with faculty in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program and engage with the law enforcement community in research and teaching.

The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience.  A PhD or equivalent in GIScience, geography, criminology, criminal justice, or a closely related field is required prior to employment; those with ABD status will be considered at the application/interviewing stage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences. 

Preferred Education and Experience: Experience with advanced GIS technologies, such as spatial data science, machine learning, and AI, is preferred and a demonstrated ability to secure external research funding.
