Job Summary
Audiology Intern will be under the clinical supervision of an Audiologist who has practiced more than 2 years. The Audiology Intern evaluates a person’s hearing and balance functions through various types of tests. May plan and conduct treatment programs for patients' hearing or balance problems, consulting with educators, physicians, surgeons, nurses, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and other health care personnel as necessary. Under the appropriate supervision, adheres to quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure accurate and safe audiology services are provided to patients. Able to complete audiological testing including, but not limited to, air and bone audiometry, speech testing, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, osseointegrated device evaluations and fittings, cochlear implant evaluations and programming thereafter, auditory brainstem response evaluations, and vestibular testing.
Able to assist in administrative tasks, such as developing and maintaining a hearing aid loaner bank. Willing to participate in conferences or training to update or share knowledge of new hearing or balance disorder treatment methods or technologies.
Administer hearing tests and examine patients to collect information on type and degree of impairment, using specialized instruments and electronic equipment. Counsel and instruct patients and their families in techniques to improve hearing and communication related to hearing loss. Evaluate hearing and balance disorders to determine diagnoses and courses of treatment. Examine and clean patients' ear canals when appropriate. Know when to refer to ENT for cerumen removal. Fit, dispense, and repair assistive devices, such as hearing aids, cochlear implant processors, or osseointegrated devices. Instruct patients, parents, teachers, or employers in communication strategies to maximize effective receptive communication. Maintain patient records at all stages, including initial and subsequent evaluation and treatment activities. Monitor patients' progress and provide ongoing observation of hearing or balance status. Program and monitor cochlear implants to fit the needs of patients. Recommend assistive devices according to patients' needs or nature of impairments. Refer patients to additional medical or educational services if needed. Work with multidisciplinary teams to assess and rehabilitate recipients of implanted hearing devices through auditory training and counseling.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution required in accordance with state licensure.
Permission from educational program’s Director of Audiology program. The student’s participation in audiology internship shall be subject to the satisfactory completion of all specified requirements by the educational institution, encompassing coursework, project/dissertation defense, and other obligations outlined by the academic program.
