As a vital member of the Government Affairs team, this individual is responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with government agencies, officials, and other stakeholders. The individual will collaborate with the Vice President of Government Affairs to develop and implement the organization's political engagement strategy. This position is high-profile, as this individual will represent McLane elected officials, regulators, and industry groups.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: - Implement strategies to advocate for the organization's interests with local, state, and federal government bodies.
- Develop reports and messaging on critical legislative issues and forecasts to executives.
- Write policy papers and briefing materials for senior executives.
- Effectively respond to questions and requests for information on government affairs issues and policy from all levels of McLane internal and external sources, associations, and organizational partners, as well as a diverse level of elected officials and staff members.
- Develop and grow strategic relationships with local, state, and federal elected officials and staff.
- Establish relationships with industry organizations, associations, and other allies to maximize collaboration opportunities.
- Assist in developing a long-term government affairs strategy to achieve McLane's goals. Lead and develop strategies supporting government affairs efforts by working with external stakeholders, thought leaders, and trade associations.
- Direct a team including an internal manager and external contract lobbyists. Provide clear guidance on tasks, and ensure message continuity when advocating before government officials, policymakers, and their staff.
- Develop and lead elected officials' tours at McLane facilities to achieve McLane initiatives and objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Government Affairs
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor or advanced degree.
- 8+ years of experience in government affairs, legislative affairs, lobbying, law, or related field.
- In-depth knowledge of government processes, legislative process, or policy formation.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing effective governmental affairs programs.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including translating complex and ambiguous policies into clear, concise summaries of issues.
- Excellent interpersonal and social skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team or in a one-on-one setting with high-level government officials.
WORKING CONDITIONS: - Office environment, generally.
- Extensive travel - 50%+
