POSITION OVERVIEWNew York Hall of Science (NYSCI) seeks an experienced Security & Safety professional to oversee all aspects of security functions and ensure the safety of visitors, staff, building and grounds. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Security and Safety Manager manages the security team, ensures adequate scheduling and staffing for events and programs, and is a key contributor to the development and implementation of comprehensive security, health and safety, emergency preparedness, and fire prevention policies and protocols.
The Security Manager will establish and track short and long-term security goals and ensure these goals are accomplished while complying with federal, state and local laws and industry standards. Succesful candidates will demonstrate exceptional team leadership abilities, project management and relationship building skills with an emphasis on collaboration and working across departments and exemplary service standards for security, safety and hospitality.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIESSecurity and Safety Management
Ensures the safety and security of the Museum, its property, staff, volunteers, visitors, and exhibits
Plans, directs, and manages the staff and operations of the Security Department to provide 24/7 protection and security
Coordinates security for events, programs, exhibits, and day-to-day operations in a manner which ensures the safety of the public
Oversees the implementation, updating, and testing of safety and disaster preparedness programs, policies, and procedures for the Museum
Provides staff with information and updates on the interpretation and application of security policies and procedures.
Oversees regular security drills and training sessions to educate staff and volunteers about security, safety, and disaster preparedness. Manages and trains emergency response teams.
Conducts or participates in security, fire, safety, and health inspections and surveys/assessments.
Advises Museum administration on “best practices” and other issues, and recommends appropriate or corrective action.
Partnering with Director Facilities to monitor and maintain all aspects of the security system.
Controls and tracks the usage of security equipment and devices. Oversees work of outside contractors during new installations and/or maintenance of security systems and CCTV; Oversees the collection, archiving, and review of security video surveillance data.
Oversees the thorough investigation and reporting of all accidents, injuries, fires, property theft or damage, and other incidents at the Museums.
Ensures that all records and reports are properly distributed and archived.
Serve on the Cross Departmental Safety Committee, contributing to a culture of safety and wellbeing at NYSCI; provide guidance and recommendations per operating plans
Other related duties, as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manage the Security staff, including daily, weekly/bi-weekly check ins with direct reports and entire team, performance management and development
Plans and directs a comprehensive, ongoing training program for all security personnel
Create schedules for the Security staff, to facilitate programming and special events needs
and relevant staff are appropriately trained and certified
Serve as a knowledge holder for time and attendance policies under the Collective Bargaining
Other related duties, and responsibilities, as assigned
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Criminal Justice, a related field, and/or its work experience equivalent
5+ years of management experience in Security and Safety Site management, preferably in a cultural institution, university, or public-facing organization with high visitation
Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local compliance and safety standards, and industry best practices
Proven track record of excellence in leadership with the ability to build motivation and teamwork in direct reports
Experience with building management systems, Including CCTV and monitoring and surveillance solutions
Prior experience managing a unionized workforce
Expertise and in security & safety-related training, learning and development programs
5+ years of active supervisory and leadership experience in managing an operational security and/or law-enforcement unit.
Experience in creating and implementing fire protection, and emergency preparedness plans, required
Knowledge of physical security, law enforcement, crowd control techniques, detection criminal activity and procedures for resolving those activities
Ability to train, supervise, direct, motivate and evaluate staff
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with public and private organizations
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; effective problem solving and conflict resolving skills
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Google Workspace, and MS Office
Ability to occasionally work evenings, weekend and holidays.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
Must be able to perform tasks that involve repetitive motions, such as typing, reaching, and handling various materials
Requires the ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods
Must be capable of lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance
Ability to work in various environments, including areas with temperature fluctuations, confined spaces, and heights
Must have the visual and auditory capacity to respond to alarms, read instruments, and communicate effectively in a noisy environment

Certified Protection Professional (CPP)
Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Valid NYC Security Guard License (16 hour)
F89/T89 Fire and Life Safety Director (preferred)
S-95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems Certification (preferred)
OSHA Certification
